POSITION: School-Based Advocate

REPORTS TO: Director of Education and Training

LOCATION: Providence, RI

SCHEDULE: Full-time (37.5 hours/week)

COMPENSATION: Nonexempt position; hourly range is $21 to $22 per hour based on experience. POSITION SUMMARY:   

Provide advocacy, support, and resources to children and youth who have experienced or witnessed domestic and/or sexual violence.   Facilitate relationships with schools and youth-centered organizations to support youth victims and to provide trainings and educational presentations when required. 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide one-on-one support, advocacy, information, crisis intervention, and education to youth victims at local middle schools, high schools, and colleges when requested.
  • Develop youth, children and /or family activities and programs for youth victims, including expressive arts classes and support groups.
  • Work with schools to support youth victims and to ensure that youth student victims feel safe at school
  • Provide training and technical assistance to schools on how to identify signs of abuse, how to communicate with youth victims, and how to support youth victims.
  • Facilitate communication between youth victims and parents 
  • Assist with case management youth victims and their families
  • Connect parent and youth victims to appropriate services as needed.
  • Conduct outreach at local schools to provide education and referrals as needed.
  • Assist with the hotline, general shelter coverage and responding to resident needs when available or assigned. 
  • Complete necessary program reports and data entry.
  • Assist with fundraising tasks and the solicitation of donations to support youth programs when possible.
  • Other duties as assigned by the management of Sojourner House or as required.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE and SKILLS:

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required, and a concentration in or experience with childhood/youth development is preferred. 
  • Two to 3 years of experience working with children and/or youth
  • Familiarity with domestic violence, sexual assault, and/or gender issues is a plus
  • Proficiency in Spanish, both written and oral, is preferred
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills
  • Comfort working individually and in teams
  • Valid driver’s license, a reliable car, and valid insurance
