WHAT IS AN ADVOCATE?
Advocates assist victims of violence as they navigate their path towards a violence-free life.
Advocates are not lawyers nor counselors. Instead, advocates can make recommendations and connect you with helpful resources. Most importantly, though, advocates listen. They do not judge, give unsolicited advice, or pressure you to make changes before you are ready. Advocates can help you develop a Safety Plan so you can live as safely as possible in your current situation. You do not have to decide to leave an abusive partner or your home before coming to see an advocate. Advocates can work with you at any point in your relationship, and advocates believe that violence can happen in many different types of relationships– you don’t have to be living with an abuser to be experiencing abuse. Advocacy meetings are confidential and take place in private offices.
